The Fleshtones were founded in 1976 by a couple of roommates in Queens, New York who discovered some instruments left by a previous tenant in the basement. They soon became famous locally for their house dance parties fueled by Blue Whales. The Fleshtones debuted at CBGB's on May 19, 1976, and started touring in earnest in the early-80s. They currently average hundreds of national and international shows a year. In May of 2006 The Fleshtones will mark their 30th anniversary as the only rock & roll band that debuted in the mid-70s in the East Village that hasn't had an inactive year.Founding members were Keith Streng (b. 1955) on guitar, Jan-Marek Pakulski (b. 1956) on bass, Peter Zaremba (b. 1954) on harmonica, keyboards, and vocals, and Lenny Calderon (b. 1958) on drums. Starting in 1978, the group was often joined on-stage and in the studio by sax and harmonica player Gordon Spaeth (1951-2005), who became an official band member in 1983.
